Whether you are a teenager or an adult, acne can be an all too common problem for you.Very few things damage your self confidence as much as active, painful and most of all visible acne lesions. As acne is such a global problem, modern medicine has been working tirelessly to develop an effective acne treatment.
A wide range of acne treatments
Since we are all individuals and a little bit different from each other, it should come as no surprise that a little bit of trial and error may be required to find the acne treatment that works best for each individual.Fortunately, an ever increasing number of possible choices, now well into the hundreds, exist to help you with treating your acne problem.
The majority of acne treatments will fall into one of these categories:
Mild cleanser - You should have no problem finding these products in your local drug store.By using mild ingredients there should be no irritation but your acne will be effectively treated by cleansing your face of dirt and bacteria.
Chemical - These products (also available over the counter) contain one of several different chemicals that are great for eliminating bacteria and reducing the occurrence of acne. Both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are fairly common examples.
Prescription - An expanding range of prescription drugs are available to help treat acne.As these acne treatments work in different ways you can be sure that no matter how severe your own acne is, there will be a treatment that can help.In order to get a prescription for these medicines you must see a doctor or dermatologist, they are not available over the counter.
Other - Light therapy, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and pulse light treatments are available acne treatments at the moment, but new developments are happening all the time as technology improves, so the next, new technique may not be far away. The majority of these kinds of acne treatments are normally only available through a doctor, dermatologist, or other skin specialist.
Stay clean, stay clear
If you can keep your skin clean and bacteria-free you are giving yourself every chance of beating acne. The importance of bacteria in causing acne cannot be overstated, therefore it makes sense that your acne will be reduced or eliminated if you can keep bacteria away.
When it comes to keeping your skin clean, gentleness pays dividends, you can rub but don't scrub. If you do scrub your skin hard you will almost certainly irritate it which will very likely lead to more bacteria causing more acne lesions. It seems strange, but when it comes to cleaning your skin, less is more. Wash your skin a maximum of two times a day using the minimum of pressure.
Although there are many different acne treatments available, there are also many different companies producing similar products. If you look closely you will see the same or very similar ingredients in comparable products. The best acne treatments make it easy for you to clean your skin thoroughly without unnecessary irritation, while not causing difficult side effects such as dryness, flaking, itching, and the like.
Always be ready to change to a different product if you are experiencing unpleasant side effects with the one you are using.Irrespective of which products you choose to use, it must be remembered that it will take time for them to work.It is important to evaluate the effectiveness of any product you are using before changing to use something else. In order to do this you must allow it a decent amount of time to work, three to four weeks being the minimum recommended.
