Treatments for acne are plentiful. Being a very common problem, people have found their own ways of treating acne. Some of them don’t cure acne but may further damage the skin. Many of us believe that acne can be treated by getting exposed to sun, but is it true? Let us find out the truth.
Once we know the causes of acne, we can find out if sunshine affects any of them. The causes of acne are very simple. Because of hormonal changes and sometimes pressure or chemicals, the body produces more sebum. While the glands keep producing sebum, the gland opening sometimes gets closed with dead skin. This makes the gland expand like a balloon. The bacteria P.acnes infects the gland and inflames it. This gland forms the acne. If the infection is not severe you will call it black head or white heads. As is gets worse, it becomes pimples, cystic acne, etc.
Every acne treatment tries to address one or more of the causes of acne formation. So for sunlight to be considered a "treatment" for acne, it would need to address one or more of the causes. But what exactly does the sun do to the skin?
The first thing it does is warm it. The body's reaction to this is going to be to produce more sweat (and oil) to try to cool the body. The sweat and oil will trap more dirt on the skin and encourage the development of acne. So, in this way, the sun has a detremental effect.
The second thing that the sun will to to skin is cause it to become tan or, in extreme cases, burned. Obviously, burning (damaging) the skin is not going to be any aid in helping with acne, but what about "getting a tan"? While the initial tan may help to hide the apprearance of the acne, it does not help to clear it up. Skin that is tan is actually drier and less elastic that un-tanned skin. Both of these characteristics would lead to more acne not less.
From this, we can determine that sunlight does not help in clearing up acne. It may actually cause it to become worse, especially if a person gets too musch sun. Rather sun damages the skin and may cause early wrinkles, aging and even cancer.
