Green tea has been used as a natural acne home remedy for many years. It is well known for its benefits to health and has been popular in China for many thousands of years to cure a wide variety of ailments. It is high in a chemical called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is a powerful antioxidant. Many studies have found that it does decrease cancer cells and green tea has also proved to be useful in treating rheumatoid arthritis, infections and in reducing cholesterol levels.
Clinical studies have reported that the EGCG, as well as being an an antioxidant, also helps to decrease inflammation on the skin that often occurs with acne. In a trial the American Academy of Dermatology applied a 1% concentration of EGCG in a gel which, when applied to the skin, was found to improve the acne at least as well as, and many times better than, a solution of benzoyl peroxide. Also the gel didn't result in dryness of the skin which is a usual side effect of using benzoyl peroxide or many other acne treatments.
Creams and gels may be bought that contain green tea or you can make a preparation at home. add some green tea to water and boil, then gently apply the cooled solution to affected areas. Also you can drink green tea which allows the ingredients to perform their work from within. You should drink at least 3 cups each day and apply the solution containing green tea extracts to the skin three times a day. In a few weeks you should see a significant improvement in your acne and you will have a much healthier skin.
There are plenty of uses of green tea for dieting and health problems, the use in the treatment of acne is just one of them. As with all natural cures for acne you should combine this approach with a healthier way of life including drinking plenty of water every day and eating a vitamin and mineral rich diet. Do not give up if your acne does not clear straight away. As is common with most natural remedies for acne green tea treatment will not work over night.
